The Sea Water Hydrogen Car

Introducing the hydrogen gas-operated internal combustion car (or truck or generator, etc.). We now have available an onboard hydrogen gas generator including magnesium and aluminum electrodes immersed in a salt-water electrolyte. The rate of hydrogen gas evolution in the generator is controlled as a function of demand, the hydrogen gas being mixed with air and supplied to the cylinders of the engine.
The Sea Water Hydrogen Car

Uses our safe, powerful, reliable and environmentally friendly non-toxic fuel cell that generates hydrogen and electricity through the combination of a saltwater electrolyte, oxygen, magnesium, aluminum and stainless steel. Sometimes called an air battery, salt water battery or metal-air fuel cell. The Pacheco Generator uses metal anodes of magnesium alloy and aluminum alloy immersed in an electrolyte coupled stainless steel cathode to generate hydrogen and direct current.

The Sea Water Hydrogen Vehicle

Introducing the hydrogen gas or diesel operated internal combustion car (or truck or generator, etc.).

The Pacheco Generator is environmentally friendly to manufacture and assemble. We create no toxic substances nor creates disposal problems. All parts are recyclable.

When the usable volume of hydrogen gas produced by the fuel cells is depleted, the magnesium anode is converted into magnesium hydroxide precipitate. The magnesium hydroxide precipitate is removed and collected for recycling and the magnesium anode and salt water electrolyte is replaced, thus easily and conveniently re-energizing the fuel cell.

Hydrogen is generated in a tank wherein magnesium and aluminum electrodes are immersed in a sea-water bath, the rate of hydrogen generation being controlled by a variable-resistance path connecting the electrodes. The hydrogen evolved in the tank is supplied through an adjustable valve into an injection system or carburetor where it is intermixed with air, the mixture being fed into the cylinders of an internal-combustion engine.

We now have available an onboard hydrogen gas generator including magnesium and aluminum electrodes immersed in a salt-water electrolyte (In lieu of salt water, one may use other ionizable compounds to provide a magnesium/aluminum-corrodable aqueous electrolyte). The rate of hydrogen gas evolution in the generator is controlled as a function of demand, the hydrogen gas being mixed with air and supplied to the cylinders of the engine.

In order to avoid pollution of the atmosphere resulting from the combustion products of gasoline, we know to operate an internal-combustion engine with propane or other gases rather than with a liquid fuel. In this instance, the internal-combustion engine is unchanged, except that the carburetor or fuel- injection is adjusted to accommodate the use of gas rather than liquid fuel.

The disadvantage of existing gas-operated vehicles is that the fuel gas is stored in pressurized tanks having a limited capacity. Since gases such as propane have a relatively limited energy content, frequent replacement of the tanks is necessary. Moreover, a tank of highly flammable gas represents a serious hazard, and in the event of an accident an explosion may occur.

With our hydrogen-on-demand system we have addressed and alieviated all of short comings and dangers of compressed gas.

Our system is based on the ability to provide hydrogen on demand from materials which are in themselves safe to handle (aluminum, magnesium and salt water). This generator can be mounted on board a vehicle for on-demand hydrogen generation. It can either provide fuel for an internal combustion engine or a fuel cell for an electric vehicle. It can also be used in a stationary setting to power a generator or fuel cell.

The Math: In order to appreciate the advantages of the Pacheco Generator, a thermodynamic analysis will now be presented, comparing the hydrogen energy system to the conventional fossil-fuel system utilizing gasoline as the energy source. According to page 1,446 of the 28th edition of the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, a mol weight of hydrogen (two grams) provides 104,100 B.t.u.'s (net), or a total of about 23,608,000 B.t.u.'s/lb.

According to the same publication (page 1,446), gasoline provides 20,750 B.t.u.'s/lb. Assuming that an automobile travels a distance of 200 miles and requires 13 gallons of gas (80 pounds), the total thermal output of the gasoline will be 1,660,000 B.t.u.'s. Assuming magnesium is now employed to create the source of energy, the amount of magnesium equivalent to 1,660,000 B.t.u.'s (100-percent conversion efficiency assumed) is determined as follows:

One mol of magnesium (24.3 grams) will react with 2 mols of water to form 1 mol of hydrogen (2 grams). The amount of hydrogen equivalent to 1,660,000 B.t.u.'s is 31.7 grams, which corresponds to about 386 grams of magnesium, or 0.85 pound. Thus, on a thermodynamic basis, a car travelling 200 miles requires 80 pounds (13 gallons) of gasoline (1,660,000 B.t.u.'s), which corresponds to about 0.85 pound of magnesium. The energy cost for gasoline at approximately $1.75 per gallon comes to about $22.75, while the cost for magnesium, at approximately $1.60. Assuming the magnesium-hydrogen system to be only 10 percent efficient, the energy cost would be in the neighborhood of $16.00, which is still less than the cost of conventional fuel, the magnesium-hydrogen system having the added advantage of avoiding air pollution. The actual efficiency of the magnesium-hydrogen system is, of course, much higher than 10 percent, hence the realistic costs of operating a vehicle is much cheaper than with gasoline.

We have also included aluminum in the new reactors, so it will be considerably less than $16.00 due to aluminum being around 60 cents per pound.

The electrodes are an alloy in order to inhibit polarization of the electrodes. The Alloys are essential to successful operation and are proprietary to our hydrogen generator design.

Obviously the electrodes will need to be replaced periodically. We will supply the magnesium and aluminum alloy plates and can be ordered from us as you desire.

How It Works: The sea water hydrogen generator produces analytically tested, hydrogen of 99.98 percent purity being evolved at the two electrodes with no traces detected of chlorine. Also as by-products the cell produces magnesium and aluminum hydroxides that when recuperated from the system, represent the stock material industrially obtained from sea water and bauxite as the first step in the industrial production of the two elements, magnesium and aluminum. The sea water hydrogen generator makes use of such elements as an ideal and fully charged electric storage system.

The sea water hydrogen generator uses the electric energy obtained by the arrangement of magnesium and aluminum as sacrificial metals and exploits this principle to evolve electrolytic hydrogen at one electrode and electrochemical reactions to produce hydrogen at the other electrode.

Our system also eliminates the problem of hydrogen storage because the arrangement of the metals will produce hydrogen directly from sea water, its natural storage as electrolyte, only on demand and in situ thus effectively eliminating consequent expenses and hazards that are related to hydrogen stored under pressure or in liquid form.

We provide a system in which the voltage generated in one or more cells wherein hydrogen is being produced electrochemically also serves to effect electrolysis in these cells and can be used in an optional electrolyzer with only aluminum plates to increase the total volume of hydrogen output.
